There is hope that two weeks for Tirana and we ended up so quickly inside a dream for confronting Prishtina. Tears are still being shed for other calm days, but will they cry calmly? Deliberately, to open the situation where until yesterday there was no sign of dialogue. What place should perhaps be taken to rebuild institutionally? Can Albania, for us, build peace with the government and the opposition in order to fix state institutions? These questions are at the center of diplomatic and political discussions these days in Tirana.
Seven days before leaving for the summer holidays, two American congressmen had arrived to hold separate meetings with Prime Minister Fatos Nano, President Rexhep Meidani, and opposition leader Sali Berisha. While the latest developments in Kosovo and international pressure for stability in Albania seem to give this visit a special weight, the main conversation is focusing on the possibility of a Nano-Berisha meeting.
In this political atmosphere, the OSCE ambassador has stated that it is time for them to reconcile. This statement, made at a politically tense moment, has increased public and political interest. The possible meeting would be seen as a step toward calming the climate and ensuring the normal functioning of institutions.
